WALKING TOGETHER

Christian growth is not meant to happen alone. God grows us as we listen to his Word and as we help one another follow Jesus.

Sometimes that happens in large gatherings, but often it happens in ordinary conversations - opening the Bible with a friend, praying together, and encouraging one another in everyday life.

Walking Together isn’t a programme or a course.
It’s a way of supporting micro-group Bible reading and prayer
across the church, using simple tools.

You don’t need to be an expert or have all the answers - just a willingness to meet with someone to look at God’s word or pray. Our aim is to make it easier for people in twos or threes to take small, faithful steps towards reading Scripture and praying with others, trusting that God works through his Word and by his Spirit as we walk together.

Getting Started

Think about who you would like to read or pray with.  It could be a friend, someone from your small group or someone you sit near on Sundays. Simply ask them if they’d be interested. If they are pick a place and time for your first meeting and a planned frequency of meeting.  It need only be 30-45 minutes and could be at home, in a café or pub, or even online. If they aren’t interested then don’t be put off. Consider who else you might approach.

Your First Meeting

Your first meeting might just be about agreeing what you are going to do and getting to know each other a bit better.. If you are going to read the Bible together then pick a book of the Bible to start on.  There are some suggestions below. If you are going to pray together agree a format that you think will work for you. Agree a decent period, 3-6 months, at the end of which you’ll review whether it is working for you.  Of course anyone can pull out at any time if they want.

Regular Meeting To Read The Bible

This is about doing something together with a brother or sister so there is no pressure on anyone to lead the study.   It’s probably good to look at relatively short Bible passages and you might find it helpful to read it through and think about it before you meet. If you are reading together do open in prayer asking for God’s help to understand His word better.   Read the passage aloud and then discuss it.  There are a couple of suggested ways you might do this on postcards in the Resources Section below. Close in prayer thanking Him for what you’ve learnt together, asking for His help to apply it, and praying briefly and honestly for each other.

Regularly Meeting To Pray

It can be helpful to read a short passage of scripture to start, maybe part of a Psalm, and pray about that. Discuss what’s going on in your life and any personal prayer points.  You can say as much or as little as you feel comfortable with. Pray together using the format you think works best for you.  There is a suggested format on the postcard in the Resources Section below.

What If It Feels Awkward

That’s not unusual at the start.  Remember that silence is okay sometimes and doesn’t always have to be filled immediately. It’s OK not to know the answer to a question that comes up in your study.  You can always ask someone else at church about it or email equip@kingschurchwalton.co.uk and the Equip team will be happy to help.  God works through faithfulness, not polish and so don’t be put off.  Keep going.
